King Stingray x Cat 5 Cyclone

King Stingray

Four piece Yolŋu surf-rock band from Yirrkala North-East Arnhem Land, Australia. Creating a genre of their own in Yolŋu surf-rock, the band merge ancient indigenous melodies with a fresh new sound. It is the follow-up of the iconic band Yothu Yindi - King Stingray are the children of the iconic Australian band Yothu Yindi.

Those familiar with King Stingray will find no surprise in the suggestion that they’ve done it again! Those who haven’t discovered these guys yet, do it.

If you like your Aus music, ‘Indie, devoid of wank and overplaying, absent of gimmick or studio effects WITH observational and relatable lyrics; akin to those of The Gobetweens and Paul Kelly’ - YOU HAVE ARRIVED.

In their latest offering, Cat 5 Cyclone, they present both the nonchalant concern for a reoccurring critical weather event, while simultaneously using it as a metaphor for something much larger, something personal.

I’ve noted here before that I appreciate a love song that doesn’t rely on the word “love” itself to convey the depth of such.

This song, with its calming reference to the blue skies - and how readily available they are - does just that.

The shelf guitar pop without a degree of obvious plagiarism or particular influence and accompanying cool music video.

Dig ‘em… even more now.

Lyrics: simple, relatable and genius as a result. Extra marks the second verse in an indigenous language - make me want to learn it. // Composition: Again, off the shelf but genuinely enjoyable. // Production: Solid. Nothing distracting or detracting from anything else. // Performance: Exactly what you’d expect from these guys. Quality.
