LSF x Malibu

LSF

5 piece alt-rock band 'LSF' are known for their intense live show featuring a variety of 90's inspired hard rock that ranges from darker intricate / psychedelic material to rock ballads.

This is another song I anticipate being way to gushy over by the end of the review, that I think it’s pertinent to get the negatives out of the way. But…ADHD tangent…W-T-actual-F! Wollongong? This place is the stomping ground and birthplace of far more brilliant and diverse sounds than Seattle and Manchester combined -and, by most recent example let me tell you about this monstrous, modern classic.

Two negatives and only for the discerning ear of a wanker like me, I can hear the 0’s and 1’s of a digital presence, it’s probably unavoidable and again, only sticky-outie for a pseudo audiophile like me. Structurally I’d have preferred being strung along for twice the length of the opening verse before the chorusing throng of “Ahh ahh” hook. Largely these two observations are for the mere benefit of criticism.

That out of the way… f*ck! Call Grohl now and explain to him that, while he’s a brilliant tunesmith, he dosen’t have anything that’s this engaging from the second it starts… ok, maybe Monkey Wrench… and he was in that other band with that big, instantly satisfying song…Teen… something.

There is a school of Pop thought that suggests if you have a hook, run it into the ground and this could easily have done that, but the change; with its deft syncopations; gear change and seamless re-entry to a most satisfying climax… we are NOT worthy.

It’s such a nice balance of agro and saccharine too. Any sweeter and it could be a Rooney or Dandy Warhols vibe, any less polished and it could be a Vines vibe. Ultimately reminiscent of a general Melbourne sound in late 90’s-00’s - Even, Anyones, Meanies and Violetine.

Headphones recommended because it’s a genuinely layered assault.

Appropriate I guess that LSF share turf with Tumbleweed given the Wall Of Sound production but again…f*ck!
